The Italian champion is seeking a second Olympic gold after his Tokyo 2020 victory: optimism about his condition

"I would sign for the gold and retirement on the evening of August 10." A victory worth retiring for. Gianmarco Tamberi summarized his Paris Olympics this way. The multi-champion high jumper, already an Olympic gold medalist in Tokyo 2020, is seeking a second Olympic gold to cap off an already legendary career in Italian sports.

The Marches native, already captain of the athletics team, has also been chosen as the flag bearer for Italy in Paris. Tamberi is one of the athletes on whom Italy places the greatest hopes for a medal, alongside tennis world number one Jannik Sinner. Despite a setback in his preparation, his condition is not a concern.

Tamberi had to pause in July due to a slight bicep injury, which affected all his preparatory competitions but not his Olympic dream. The 32-year-old missed the Continental Tour in Hungary, the Monte-Carlo event, and the home event in Ancona, all key stages leading up to Paris.

However, the Ancona native has fully recovered: "The small fascial tear has completely healed. We restart with the same desire but with much more hunger and determination." Tamberi will compete at the Stade de France in Paris on Wednesday, August 7, from 10:00 AM for the qualifications. The high jump final is scheduled for three days later, on Saturday, August 10, starting at 7:10 PM.
