In Iceland, the verdict has been delivered in the legal case involving Albert Gudmundsson, a player for Fiorentina. According to several reports, the Reykjavík Court has acquitted the player of the sexual misconduct charges.
The events date back to the summer of 2023, and further developments are awaited regarding the possibility of an appeal by the prosecution, which has one month to decide whether to proceed. If an appeal is filed, a final ruling may not be reached until June 2025.
Following the acquittal, Gudmundsson shared a message on his Instagram profile expressing his relief: "Innocent! This is the clear conclusion of the Reykjavík District Court in today's ruling. While we always believed in a positive outcome, the verdict comes with a sense of relief. It’s been a tough year, mentally challenging, but I’ve learned that my family and friends mean everything to me, and I will be forever grateful to them. Finally, I want to express that I will never support any form of violence. As a father of two, including a young daughter, and with three younger sisters, I sincerely hope that this case doesn’t harm other women who are true victims of violence. Now I can move on with my life and focus on what I do best. With love, Albert."
The player’s lawyer, Vilhjálmur H. Vilhjálmsson, welcomed the verdict, calling it detailed and well-reasoned. He emphasized that the court found Gudmundsson's statements credible, and stated that the State Prosecutor's decision to reopen the case had been a mistake.
