As announced by CONI president Giovanni Malagò during the National Council meeting on April 22, fencer Arianna Errigo and high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi will be the flag bearers for the Italy Team at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. There is much curiosity and anticipation to see the tricolor waved in the hands of these two athletes. But who is Arianna Errigo? Let's find out together.
Born in 1988, Arianna made her Olympic debut at the London 2012 Games, immediately winning a silver medal in individual foil. In the final, she narrowly defeated her compatriot Elisa Di Francisca 12-11 after an extra minute. The bronze went to another Italian, Valentina Vezzali, marking a historic all-Italian podium. Alongside her teammates, including Di Francisca and Ilaria Salvatori, Errigo also won gold in the team event.
Following her glorious first Olympics, Errigo faced disappointment at Rio 2016, where her run ended in the round of 16. However, she redeemed herself at Tokyo 2020, winning bronze in the team event with Martina Batini, Alice Volpi, and Erica Cipressa. Now, at nearly 36 years old, Errigo is ready to compete in her fourth Olympics in Paris 2024. With her experience and winning mentality, she is one of the veterans of the Italian team.
Besides her Olympic medals, she boasts an impressive record with ten World Championship medals (two golds, three silvers, and five bronzes), 19 European Championship medals (12 golds), and five overall World Cup victories in foil. Errigo is a member of the Carabinieri and is coached by her husband, Luca Simoncelli. She arrives at Paris 2024 as the mother of twins, Mirea and Stefano, born in March 2023.
