A triumph that smells like history. Luna Rossa claimed the Women’s America’s Cup against the British Athena Pathway team after an exhilarating final regatta in the waters of Barcelona. An endless joy for Giulia Conti, Margherita Porro, Giulia Fava, and Maria Giubilei, who have cemented their place in Italian sailing history. The Italian flag reigns supreme in the first-ever edition of the Women’s America’s Cup. Luna Rossa’s victory, painted in pink, mirrors the success of the Youth AC.
Luna Rossa had a strong start on the left side of the course, with Conti and her team managing the race flawlessly. The Italian boat displayed almost absolute dominance. Luna Rossa kept a steady lead over the British team in the first two gates, then extended the gap to 11 seconds at the next two marks. The lead grew to 19 seconds, and Luna Rossa crossed the finish line with an 8-second advantage over Athena Pathway.
This final confirmed Luna Rossa’s dominance in the waters of Barcelona. Conti, Porro, Fava, and Giubilei reached the final act of the competition after placing second in the six Round Robins of the qualifying rounds, collecting 39 points. Athena finished in first place with 46 points.
The tide began to turn in the semifinals, with Luna Rossa tying with the British at 27 points. Behind them were the Spanish, Swedish, New Zealand, and Dutch boats. After the first round of the America’s Cup (with Emirates Team New Zealand leading Ineos Britannia 2-0 after the first day), the final delivered a historic victory for the Italian sailors, who embraced and celebrated while the boat was still gliding through the water. A grand celebration followed with coach Simone Salvà and the youth team of Luna Rossa. Two America’s Cups won by Italy (Women and Youth) is no small feat…
