The America’s Cup, the world’s oldest and most prestigious sailing competition, is set to return with its 37th edition. This event, which combines history, technology, and strategy, is eagerly anticipated by sailing enthusiasts. The next edition will take place in Barcelona from October 12 to 21, 2024.
The America’s Cup has a long history that dates back to 1851, when the New York Yacht Club challenged the English Royal Yacht Squadron and won with their vessel "America." This victory marked the beginning of a long tradition in sailing competition. In 1857, the trophy was renamed the "America’s Cup," and the first challenge under this name occurred in 1870. For over a century, the Americans dominated, winning 24 consecutive times until 1983 when Australia II from the Royal Perth Yacht Club broke their streak.
The America’s Cup 2024 will be held in Barcelona, a city with a rich maritime tradition and ideal conditions for regattas. The preliminary races will start with the Louis Vuitton Cup, which will determine the challenging team. This phase includes round-robin races from August 29 to September 8, followed by semifinals from September 14 to 19, and the final from September 26 to October 5.
Before the Louis Vuitton Cup, preparation regattas will take place from August 22 to 25, where all teams, including the Defender Team New Zealand, will compete with their AC75 boats, known as "flying boats" for their ability to lift out of the water and reach speeds over 100 km/h.
Emirates Team New Zealand, the winner of the last few editions, is the Defender and the team to beat. With four victories (1995, 2000, 2017, 2021), the New Zealanders are icons of modern competition. This year, they will face fierce challengers.
The Challenger of Record is Ineos Britannia, backed by the financial power of Jim Ratcliffe and the technological expertise of the Mercedes Formula 1 team. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli represents Italy and seeks revenge after their defeat in the last edition. Alinghi Red Bull Racing, winners in 2003 and 2007, bring the advanced engineering of Red Bull Advanced Technologies. American Magic and Orient Express Racing Team round out the group of contenders, each with unique ambitions and strategies.
The 2024 America’s Cup promises to be an exciting and competitive event with top-notch teams and cutting-edge technology. Emirates Team New Zealand will strive to defend their title against formidable opponents, ensuring thrilling races for sailing fans worldwide.
