England are through to the final of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, edging past Italy 2–1 after extra time in a dramatic semi-final in Geneva. Chloe Kelly converted the winning goal in the 119th minute, scoring on the rebound after Giuliani had saved her initial penalty.
The Azzurre had taken the lead in the 33rd minute through Barbara Bonansea, capitalising on a slick move down the right and firing under the bar at the far post. The Lionesses, reigning European champions, equalised deep into stoppage time at the end of regulation, with Agyemang slotting home from close range in the 96th minute after a Giuliani parry fell kindly for her.
The match opened with England on the front foot, with Lauren James testing Giuliani early with a volley that lacked power. Italy responded through Bonansea, and made their first real opportunity count with a well-worked team goal involving Caruso and Cantore.
In the second half, Italy came close to doubling their lead when Cantore broke clear on the counter, but her shot was well saved by Hampton. Girelli was forced off midway through the half with a suspected muscle injury and was replaced by Piemonte. England pushed late on and nearly equalised through Bronze, but Oliviero cleared the danger just in time. The breakthrough finally came in the sixth minute of stoppage time when Agyemang pounced to send the match into extra time.
During the additional 30 minutes, England pushed hard while a visibly fatigued Italy struggled to hold on. The decisive moment came in the 119th minute: Severini was penalised for a foul on Mead, and although Giuliani brilliantly saved Kelly’s penalty, the Manchester City forward reacted first to tuck in the rebound.
England now await the winner of the second semi-final between Spain and Germany, as they look to defend their European crown in Sunday’s final.
