The round of 16 at the ATP 1000 tournament in Shanghai is nearing its end, and the quarterfinal matchups on the hard courts of the Chinese metropolis will soon be set. Jannik Sinner stood out with a solid, yet hard-fought, victory against American Ben Shelton. The final score was 6-4, 7-6, in a match lasting an hour and a half. Next up for the Italian is Danil Medvedev, the fifth seed and a familiar opponent, including a memorable battle in a Flushing Meadows final. Medvedev, too, didn’t have it easy, edging out Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas 3-6, 6-7 after two hours of play.
Carlos Alcaraz’s flawless run continued, as he defeated Gael Monfils 6-4, 7-5. The world number two will now face Czech player Tomas Machac, ranked 33rd, who impressed with a remarkable comeback win over Tommy Paul in three sets. Djokovic, in great form, breezed into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Safiullin, mirroring his performance against Cobolli. Another Czech player, Jakub Mensik, will stand between the Serbian and the semifinals. The 19-year-old from Prostejov delivered a standout performance, defeating Grigor Dimitrov in three sets, showcasing the talents of this 2005-born prospect.
The last quarterfinal match is yet to be decided. Holger Rune or Talor Fritz will face the winner between David Goffin and Alexander Zverev. Rune is coming off convincing wins against Matteo Berrettini and Lehecka, while Fritz easily dispatched Japan's Watanuki in straight sets. Goffin is in excellent form following comeback victories over Lorenzo Musetti and Marco Giron, while Zverev took care of Mattia Bellucci in straight sets and Talon Griekspoor in three. Hubert Hurkacz claimed victory at last year’s ATP Shanghai in 2023.
