The 2025 Australian Open is set to kick off as the qualifiers for the first Grand Slam of the tennis season have concluded, and the main draw has been announced. Of the two Italians who reached the final qualifying round in Melbourne—Matteo Gigante and Francesco Passaro—only Gigante secured a spot in the main draw. The 2002-born Roman player defeated Portuguese Henrique Rocha 6-4, 7-5 in the third and final round. This marks Gigante’s debut in a Grand Slam tournament.
Unfortunately for Francesco Passaro, his journey ended at the hands of Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili. The former world No. 16 overcame the Italian with a solid 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Another standout result came from rising star Joao Fonseca. The Brazilian, born in 2006, comfortably defeated Tirante 6-4, 6-1. This will also be Fonseca’s first-ever appearance in a Grand Slam main draw, following his triumph at the Next Gen ATP Finals.
Other players who secured their place include former world No. 17 Cristian Garin, Americans Mitchell Krueger and Tristan Boyer—the latter defeating Christopher Eubanks—and Spanish prospect Martin Landaluce, another 2006-born player.
The remaining slots in the Australian Open main draw were claimed by Thiago Monteiro, Tunisia’s Aziz Dougaz, Dominik Koepfer, Faria, Kamil Majchrzak, and Gauthier Onclin, who upset former world No. 37 Mackenzie McDonald. Wins also came for Learner Tien, Lukas Klein, and Lebanese player Hady Habib, currently ranked No. 219 in the ATP standings.
The 2025 Australian Open is ready to welcome the world’s top players as the hunt for world No. 1 Jannik Sinner begins anew.
