The Roman stuns the top seed. Meanwhile, Sinner leads the Italian charge toward the Internazionali d’Italia

Big statement from Matteo Berrettini on the red clay of Monte Carlo. The Italian, ranked No. 34 in the world, pulled off one of the standout victories of his season by coming from behind to defeat world No. 2 and top seed Alexander Zverev in the Monte Carlo Masters 1000. In an intense and high-quality clash, Berrettini triumphed 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 after more than two and a half hours of battle.

With growing confidence and form, Berrettini now advances to the Round of 16, where he’ll face the winner of the all-Italian showdown between Lorenzo Musetti and Czech Jiri Lehecka. Zverev’s early exit also ensures that Jannik Sinner will remain atop the ATP rankings at least until the Internazionali d’Italia, set to take place in Rome from May 7 to 18.

And it’s in Rome that the Italian tennis movement is preparing to showcase its brightest generation yet. The entry list for the 82nd edition of the tournament has been made official, featuring Sinner, Berrettini, Musetti, Flavio Cobolli, Mattia Arnaldi, Lorenzo Sonego, Luciano Darderi, and Mattia Bellucci. For both Sinner and Musetti, it will be their sixth appearance at the Foro Italico.

Berrettini, returning to his home Masters for the first time since 2021, is set to play in front of an enthusiastic crowd that has already cheered him on in Monte Carlo. For Bellucci, one of Italy’s rising stars, it will be a main draw debut. The Italian squad arrives in Rome with talent, ambition, and a clear message: they’re ready to aim high.
