Yesterday in Brussels, the Diamond League kicked off with some of the brightest stars in world athletics. In the men’s 100m, Jamaican Yohan Blake ended his season with a victory, clocking 9.93 seconds to beat Americans Christian Coleman (10.00) and Fred Kerley (10.01). Highlight of the day was Lorenzo Simonelli’s performance in the 110m hurdles: the Italian led until the penultimate hurdle before finishing second in 13.24, overtaken by France’s Sasha Zhoya, who won in 13.16. Trey Crittenden finished third in 13.24.
In the women’s 400m, Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic dominated with a time of 49.45, ahead of American Alexis Holmes (50.32) and Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain (50.64).
In the men’s pole vault, world record holder Armand Duplantis took the win with 6.11m, without attempting to break his own record. Behind him were Emmanouil Karalis and Ben Broeders, both clearing 5.82m. In the women’s event, Yaroslava Mahuchikh won with 1.97m, edging out Nicola Olyslagers, who had one more miss. Iryna Herashchenko finished third.
In the men’s 5000m, Ethiopian Berihu Aregawi triumphed with a strong finish, clocking 12:43.66, followed by compatriots Hagos Gebrhiwet (12:44.25) and Yomif Kejelcha (12:45.63). In the women’s 100m, Olympic champion Julien Alfred took the win in 10.88, ahead of Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith (10.92) and Marie-Josée Ta Lou (10.96).
In the men’s long jump, Mattia Furlani fell short, finishing fourth with 7.88m. The event was won by Tajay Gayle with 8.28m, followed by Simon Ehammer (8.16m) and Miltiadis Tentoglou (8.15m). In the men’s 3000m steeplechase, Kenya’s Abraham Kibiwot Serem won in 8:06.90, outpacing Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali (8:08.60) with a decisive pace change on the last lap. Third was Tunisia’s Ahmed Jhinaoui (8:09.68).
In the men’s 1500m, Jakob Ingebrigtsen bounced back with a victory in 3:30.37, ahead of Timothy Cheruiyot (3:30.93) and Cole Hocker (3:30.94).
Dariya Derkach finished sixth in the triple jump with 13.45m, while Cuba’s Liadagmis Povea took the win with 14.37m. In the men’s 400m, Charlie Dobson of Great Britain pulled off a surprising win in 44.49, ahead of Kirani James (44.63) and Muzala Samukonga (44.69). Hudson-Smith was slowed by an injury.
Tonight, in the final day of the Diamond League, all eyes will be on Gianmarco Tamberi in the high jump and Leonardo Fabbri in the shot put. Also competing will be Larissa Iapichino in the long jump, Roberta Bruni in the pole vault, and Ayomide Folorunso in the 400m hurdles.
