The football world has been shaken by devastating news: Diogo Jota, 28, has died in a car accident while on holiday in Spain. His brother, André Jota, a player for Portuguese second-division side Penafiel, also lost his life in the crash. Diogo had married his partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22, and leaves behind his wife and their three children.

According to local reports, the accident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday on the A-52 near Cernadilla. The vehicle the Jota brothers were travelling in veered off the road and caught fire, leaving no chance of survival.

Born in 1996, Diogo Jota made his Primeira Liga debut at 18 with Paços de Ferreira before moving to Porto and then making his breakthrough in England with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Liverpool signed him in 2020, where he scored 65 goals in 182 appearances, winning two Carabao Cups, one FA Cup, one Community Shield, and the Premier League title. For Portugal, he earned 49 caps, scoring 14 goals and helping the national team win two Nations League titles.
