A dream come true for Federico Cinà. The young tennis player from Palermo is set to make his ATP Tour debut in none other than a Masters 1000 event, the Miami Open, scheduled from March 16 to 30. Thanks to a wildcard granted by the tournament organizers, the 17-year-old will have the opportunity to compete against some of the world's top-ranked players.
The invitation to the main draw is a well-earned reward for the remarkable progress Cinà has made over the past year. A former world No. 4 in the junior rankings, the young Sicilian recently claimed his second ITF title in Sharm El Sheikh, defeating American Martin Damm in the final with a double 7-6 (7/3). This victory propelled him into the top 500 for the first time, currently sitting at No. 499 in the ATP rankings. His rise has been meteoric—he started 2024 ranked 1,853 and finished the season at No. 521, making him the second-highest-ranked under-18 player in the world behind Germany's Justin Engel.
Tennis runs in Cinà’s blood. His father, Francesco, is a renowned coach who previously worked with Roberta Vinci, while his mother, Susanna Attili, was a professional player, reaching a career-high WTA ranking of 407 in singles and 131 in doubles. Growing up surrounded by the sport, Cinà has trained at the Country Time Club in Palermo under the guidance of his father and fitness coach Marco Salerno. His junior career has been impressive, reaching the semifinals at the 2023 US Open and the Round of 16 at both the Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Last November, he celebrated his first Challenger-level victory, advancing to the quarterfinals in Matsuyama, Japan.
While his fundamentals are solid, he acknowledges that his serve and forehand still need refinement. "I need to improve my serve a lot and become more consistent, but my forehand is getting stronger," he revealed in an interview with Supertennis last November.
