Alberto Gilardino is no longer the coach of Genoa. In a surprising move, just days before the Serie A resumes, the Ligurian club decided to dismiss the coach and appoint Patrick Vieira in his place. The former Juventus and Inter midfielder takes over a team showing improvement, having secured 4 points in their last two matches. However, these results weren’t enough for Gilardino to retain his position on the Rossoblù bench.
The former striker took charge in December 2022, replacing Blessin in Serie B, and quickly brought Genoa back to Serie A. Last season, Gilardino led the team to a comfortable safety as newly promoted. However, the summer transfer window revolution complicated the current campaign. The Ligurian club sold all their key players, including Josep Martinez, Gudmundsson, and Retegui. After a challenging start to the season, Genoa had begun a slow recovery, earning 4 points from the last 6 available. The arrival of Mario Balotelli added to the mix, but the shock decision to sack Gilardino came in recent hours.
This marks the fourth dismissal of the Serie A season, following those of De Rossi and Juric in Rome and Luca Gotti at Lecce. Rome has already seen two coaching changes: the De Rossi-Juric shake-up and now Claudio Ranieri’s return to the Giallorossi. In Lecce, Giampaolo was chosen to replace Gotti, aiming to turn the tide for the Puglian side.
Coaching dismissals have also been common in Europe’s top leagues. Among the most notable is Erik ten Hag’s departure from Manchester United, replaced by Amorim. Ligue 1 has seen two changes (Julien Stéphan at Rennes and Der Zakarian at Montpellier), while La Liga and the Bundesliga have each recorded one: Las Palmas sacked Luis Carrión, appointing Diego Martinez, and Bochum replaced Peter Zeidler with Dieter Hecking.
