The Azzurre made history in Geneva, where nearly 25,000 fans witnessed a closely contested quarter-final. Italy started strong, pressing Norway with intensity and ambition. The breakthrough came in the 50th minute, when Cristiana Girelli slotted home from close range after a well-placed assist by Sofia Cantore.
Norway responded in the 66th minute through Ada Hegerberg, who made amends after missing a penalty just five minutes earlier. The equaliser shifted the momentum, and the Norwegians pushed forward in search of a winner.
But it was Italy who struck late. In the dying minutes, Girelli found the net again — once more assisted by Cantore — to seal a dramatic 2–1 win and send Italy through to the final four.
Next up for Italy: a semi-final clash against the winner of Sweden vs England — two powerhouses of women’s football, ranked sixth and fifth respectively in the FIFA standings.
