Mats Hummels has officially confirmed he will hang up his boots at the end of the current season. The 36-year-old Roma centre-back shared the news through an emotional video on social media, reflecting on a career that spanned nearly two decades. “The end. What a journey. Danke, Grazie, Thank you”, he wrote, accompanied by a montage of iconic moments from his time on the pitch.
“It’s a moment every player eventually faces,” Hummels said. “After more than 18 years, this summer I’ll bring my career to a close. Looking back, I can only be thankful—for the coaches who believed in me, the teammates who stood by my side, the supporters who followed me. I’ve lived something truly special.”
A World Cup winner with Germany in 2014, Hummels amassed 16 major titles with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, including Bundesliga championships, national cups, and Supercups. He also claimed the UEFA U21 Euro title in 2009, adding to his impressive legacy.
Though his time at Roma did not yield silverware, and was marked by a few costly mistakes—most notably in the Coppa Italia and Europa League—the German veteran remained a respected figure on and off the pitch.
“Talent is just one part of the equation,” he added. “You also need the right people, the right timing, good health. I was lucky to have all of that. Without it, my career wouldn’t have reached this level. Now it’s time to close this chapter.”
