Jannik Sinner is ready to make his highly anticipated return to the ATP Tour. The world’s top-ranked player will begin his campaign at the Italian Open on Saturday, May 10, starting directly from the second round. His first opponent at the Foro Italico will be either fellow Italian Federico Cinà or Argentina’s Mariano Navone.
During the draw event held at the iconic Trevi Fountain, the path to the title revealed some tough potential matchups for the Italian. In the quarterfinals, Sinner could meet either Casper Ruud – fresh off a win in Madrid – or Matteo Berrettini. A semifinal may bring a clash with Taylor Fritz or Alex De Minaur, while Carlos Alcaraz, who sits in the opposite half, can only be encountered in the final.
Among the other Italians, Lorenzo Musetti, seeded eighth, will play against the winner of Hamad Medjedovic and a qualifier. Berrettini awaits the victor of the first-round match between Fabio Fognini and Britain’s Jacob Fearnley, with a possible meeting against Ruud next.
Mattia Bellucci will debut against Pedro Martinez, while Matteo Gigante faces Arthur Rinderknech. Matteo Arnaldi is set to challenge Roberto Bautista Agut, and an all-Italian battle will see Luca Nardi take on Flavio Cobolli. Lorenzo Sonego and Francesco Passaro will both meet a qualifier, and Luciano Darderi plays China’s Yunchaokete Bu.
The women’s draw also promises exciting matchups. Jasmine Paolini, the sixth seed, enters in round two and could face fellow Italian Giorgia Pedone, who opens against New Zealand’s Lulu Sun. Watch out for Tyra Caterina Grant, the 17-year-old Italian-American making her national debut, who will play Alexandra Eala — the Filipino rising star who reached the Miami Open semifinals earlier this year.
Other Italian contenders include Arianna Zucchini, who may face Coco Gauff in the second round; Lucrezia Stefanini will play Veronika Kudermetova; Federica Urgesi meets Bianca Andreescu; Lucia Bronzetti is set to challenge Anastasija Sevastova; Nuria Brancaccio plays Peyton Stearns; Sara Errani takes on Naomi Osaka; and Elisabetta Cocciaretto will face Elina Avanesyan.
