Two out of five Italians made it through a mixed day for Italy at Roland Garros, across both the men's and women’s singles draws.
On the men's side, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner delivered a confident performance, easing past Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 7-5, to advance to the second round without much trouble.
No such luck for Giulio Zeppieri, who couldn’t keep pace with Carlos Alcaraz, falling 3-6, 4-6, 2-6 in a match dominated by the Spaniard. Luciano Darderi also exited the tournament, losing in straight sets to American Sebastian Korda, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.
The women’s draw brought better news: Elisabetta Cocciaretto defeated Taylor Townsend 6-3, 6-2, taking advantage of her opponent’s physical struggles in the closing stages. However, Lucia Bronzetti was unable to join her in the next round, falling 3-6, 2-6 to Ekaterina Alexandrova.
A day of ups and downs for Italian tennis in Paris, with Sinner and Cocciaretto keeping hopes alive at Roland Garros.
