Italy has arrived in Paris with its largest delegation ever. The goal is to surpass the medal record set at the last edition held in Tokyo in 2020. Four years ago, Italy achieved an all-time high in the medal tally with 40 podium finishes.
The previous records were held by Los Angeles 1932 and Rome 1960, with 36 medals each. However, despite the record in Tokyo, the edition with the most gold medals remains Los Angeles 1984, where Italian athletes secured 14 golds. In Rome, Atlanta, and Sydney, there were 13 golds, and 10 each in Tokyo (1964) and Athens.
Looking back at the Tokyo 2020 edition, the Italian delegation won 10 golds, 10 silvers, and 20 bronzes. For the first time in Olympic history, Italy won at least one medal on each day of the Games. Additionally, Italy earned at least one medal in 19 different disciplines, another record.
Some of the victories were unforgettable, such as Marcell Jacobs' gold in the 100 meters and Gianmarco Tamberi's gold in the high jump. Italian athletics even finished second in the discipline's medal table, with 5 golds, including the 4x100 relay. The only downside was in fencing, with no gold medals won in the Japanese edition, something that hadn't happened since Moscow 1980.
The 10 gold medals were won by Vito Dell'Aquila in Taekwondo, Federica Cesarini and Valentina Rodini in Rowing, the aforementioned Tamberi and Jacobs, Caterina Banti and Ruggero Tita in Sailing, Simone Consonni, Filippo Ganna, Francesco Lamon, and Jonathan Milan in track cycling, Massimo Stano and Antonella Palmisano in race walking, Luigi Busà in Karate, and Lorenzo Patta, Marcell Jacobs, Fausto Desalu, and Filippo Tortu in the 4x100 relay. The pursuit continues in Paris.
