A major upset hit the Miami Open as Carlos Alcaraz, seeded second and ranked No. 3 in the world, lost in his first match to Belgian veteran David Goffin, who came from behind to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. The early exit ends Alcaraz’s hopes of overtaking Jannik Sinner in the ATP rankings before the Italian’s expected return in Rome.
It’s the second consecutive defeat for Alcaraz, following his semifinal loss in Indian Wells. With this result, only Alexander Zverev can now threaten Sinner’s current ranking.
Another surprise came from Daniil Medvedev, who was easily beaten 6-2, 6-3 by Spain’s Jaume Munar—a loss likely to drop him out of the ATP top 10.
On the other hand, Novak Djokovic had a smooth start, defeating Australian Rinky Hijikata 6-0, 7-6(1). The six-time Miami champion will face Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina in the third round.
