The final race weekend of the season will decide the World Championship. Martin could clinch the title as early as the Sprint Race

History awaits at Montmeló. MotoGP returns to Barcelona for the 2024 World Championship finale, on a circuit that replaced Valencia after the devastating floods that struck the Spanish city. The Catalan track will crown the new world champion, with Jorge Martin on the brink of glory.

Two-time world champion Pecco Bagnaia faces a monumental task, needing not only a flawless performance but also some help from his rival riding for Ducati Pramac. The standings show Martin leading with 485 points, followed by Bagnaia at 461, trailing by 24 points. Should they finish tied, the title would go to the Italian due to his greater number of race victories (10 to Martin’s 3).

Between the Sprint Race and the main race, Bagnaia must recover 24 points from the Spaniard. A maximum of 37 points are up for grabs—12 in the Sprint and 25 in Sunday’s race. For Bagnaia to pull off the comeback and score all 37 points, Martin must earn no more than 13. If Bagnaia secures 24 points, Martin would need to finish with 10 points or fewer, and so on.

For Martin, the calculations are simpler: winning the Sprint Race would make him world champion immediately. The Spaniard only needs to manage his lead and keep Bagnaia in check, steering clear of crashes that could reignite Pecco's title hopes. Bagnaia, on the other hand, has no choice but to go all-in for victory and hope for a stroke of luck.

The championship will be decided in Barcelona before major shakeups hit the grid in 2025. Marc Marquez is set to join Bagnaia in the official Ducati team, while Martin will move to Aprilia, bidding farewell to Pramac Racing.
