The penultimate lap crash of the Spanish rider handed victory and the lead in the standings to the Italian world champion

With ten races remaining in the MotoGP World Championship, the situation is clear. With six victories and seven podiums so far, Francesco "Pecco" Bagnaia of the Ducati Lenovo Team sits at the top of the standings with 222 points. However, the lead over second-place Jorge Martin of Prima Pramac Racing is quite slim (the Spaniard has 212 points with 2 victories and 6 podiums). The final stretch of the 2024 MotoGP World Championship could unfold similarly to last year, when Bagnaia triumphed again (already world champion in 2022) with 467 points (11 victories and 28 podiums). The Spanish rider Martin finished second with 428 points (12 victories and 21 podiums).

Bagnaia is coming off four consecutive wins (Gran Premio de Catalunya, GP d'Italia at Mugello, TT Assen, and Motorrad GP Deutschland at Sachsenring). Martin's last victory was at the GP de France in Le Mans on May 12, where Pecco Bagnaia finished third behind Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP). In the most recent race at Sachsenring in Germany, Jorge Martin finished with zero points as he crashed on the penultimate lap in turn 1 while leading the race. Forced to retire, the victory went to Bagnaia, who overtook Martin in the standings to become the new leader of the World Championship.

"It's not easy to accept a crash after 27 laps in the lead. I feel strong, but I made another mistake and need to understand why," said Martin after the crash that cost him the victory in Germany. "The planets aligned because we were not the favorites here, but we worked very hard and managed to put ourselves in a position to fight for the win. In the end, I put pressure on Martin, seeing that he was making several mistakes," Bagnaia said after the race. The championship will resume from August 2 to 4 at Silverstone for a thrilling conclusion with the final ten races on the schedule.
