Lorenzo rallies past Bu in three sets, while Matteo edges Navone. Fognini says goodbye early

Italian tennis kicked off the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 with a strong statement, even without top gun Jannik Sinner on court. Both Lorenzo Musetti and Matteo Berrettini moved into the second round, showing grit and promise on the iconic clay of the Principality.

Musetti had to fight hard against China’s Yunchaokete Bu, eventually turning around a tricky opener to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Cold conditions and a tenacious opponent made life complicated for the Carrara native, but his signature touch and shot variety proved decisive. After a slow start, Musetti raised his level just in time, sealing the win with a smooth backhand volley and a clenched fist.

Berrettini, meanwhile, overcame a stern challenge from Argentina’s Mariano Navone, winning 6-4, 6-4. After leading 4-1 in the second set, the Italian briefly lost momentum before regaining control to close out the match confidently. He now faces top seed Alexander Zverev, with the head-to-head tilted in the German’s favor (4-2).

There was disappointment, however, for Fabio Fognini. The 2019 Monte Carlo champion bowed out in just over an hour, losing 6-0, 6-3 to Francisco Cerundolo. Playing thanks to a wild card, the veteran struggled to find rhythm and could not match the Argentine’s pace.
