The curtain officially rose on the 2024-25 NBA season. On the night of October 23, the 79th regular season of the world's most famous basketball league began, set to conclude on April 13, 2025. The season opener took place at TD Garden, where the reigning champions, the Boston Celtics, celebrated their 18th title, won last June, with the ring ceremony conducted by commissioner Adam Silver, before facing the New York Knicks.
Tatum and company dominated their opponents, winning 132-109 and even tying the NBA record with 29 made three-pointers. Leading the charge was none other than the Celtics' superstar and true symbol, Jayson Tatum, who delivered an outstanding performance with 37 points and 10 assists. Boston imposed its pace from the very beginning, surging ahead 43-24 by the end of the first quarter. Alongside Tatum's majestic showing, Derrick White (24 points) and Jaylen Brown (23 points) also stood out for the Celtics.
On the Knicks' side, guards Jalen Brunson and Miles McBride each scored 22 points. Forward Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 12 points on just 9 shot attempts. The night continued with the Los Angeles Lakers defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves 110-103. At the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, the home team delivered a convincing performance on all fronts. All eyes were, of course, on LeBron James, who played alongside his son Bronny for about two minutes. The Lakers, coached by first-time head coach JJ Redick, were carried by an extraordinary Anthony Davis, who posted 36 points, 16 rebounds, and 3 blocks. LeBron added 16 points, while Rui Hachimura had an impressive 18 points, and guard Austin Reaves contributed 12 points and 9 rebounds.
For the Timberwolves, Anthony Edwards shone with 27 points, Julius Randle scored 16, and Rudy Gobert registered 14 points along with 11 rebounds. Nickeil Alexander-Walker also added 14 points. The Lakers shifted into high gear during the second quarter, with a 27-6 run that pushed LeBron and his teammates to a 19-point lead (51-32). Despite the Timberwolves narrowing the gap to just 4 points with ten minutes left (85-81), they couldn't complete the comeback.
Looking ahead, the NBA Cup is scheduled to take place between November 12 and December 17. The 2025 All-Star Game will be held at the Chase Center in San Francisco on February 16, 2025. The play-in tournament is set for April 15-18, followed by the playoffs beginning on April 19.
