Italy’s team in Paris won 24 gold, 15 silver, and 32 bronze medals, marking the second-best performance in its history, surpassed only by the 1960 Rome Games

The curtain has fallen on the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Sunday night at the Stade de France, another memorable edition for Italy was concluded. The two flag bearers chosen for the closing ceremony were swimmer Domiziana Mecenate and Ndiaga Dieng.

Italy finishes the Paralympics with an impressive 71 medals (24 gold, 15 silver, and 32 bronze) and sixth place in the final medal standings. At Tokyo 2020, Italy ended ninth with 69 podiums (14 gold, 29 silver, and 26 bronze). The all-time record remains at Rome 1960, where the Italian team secured 82 podium finishes (28 gold, 30 silver, and 24 bronze). However, back then, there were only 400 athletes from just 21 delegations.

The Italian delegation in Paris was the largest ever, with 141 participants, including 51 first-timers, and swimming was again Italy’s most successful sport: it brought home the most medals with 16 gold, 6 silver, and 15 bronze, totaling 37 podiums out of 71.

The Paris 2024 Paralympic medal table was dominated by China, with a staggering 220 medals, including 94 gold, 76 silver, and 50 bronze. The United Kingdom came second (49 gold, 44 silver, 31 bronze), followed by the United States (36 gold, 42 silver, 27 bronze).

Only two other delegations finished ahead of Italy: the Netherlands, with 27 gold, 17 silver, and 12 bronze, and Brazil, with 25 gold, 26 silver, and 38 bronze. Host country France, after its strong performance in the Olympic Games, closed the Paralympics in eighth place with 75 medals: 19 gold, 28 silver, and 28 bronze.
