Michał Probierz has officially resigned as head coach of Poland’s national team. The decision came on the evening of June 12, following days of escalating tension and an open rift with star striker Robert Lewandowski. The Barcelona forward had publicly stated he would no longer play for the national team as long as Probierz was at the helm.
The fallout stemmed from a broken relationship with key players and, most notably, with Lewandowski, who strongly opposed being stripped of the captaincy. In an increasingly untenable atmosphere, Probierz chose to step aside: “I don’t want to be a problem for the national team. I hope this decision helps the squad regain unity and focus on future goals”, he said.
The final blow came in recent days when Lewandowski reportedly doubled down on his stance: “As long as Probierz is on the bench, I won’t return. It’s a matter of principle”, he told close associates, according to Polish media.
The Polish Football Association confirmed the departure in an official statement, thanking Probierz for his work and launching the search for a new head coach. The aim is twofold: restore a positive environment and convince Lewandowski to rejoin the team ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
