Christian Horner has been dismissed by Red Bull with immediate effect, marking a shock departure for the 51-year-old Brit

In a stunning development within Red Bull Racing, team principal Christian Horner has left the team with immediate effect. The 51-year-old had led Red Bull since its debut in Formula One in 2005, guiding the team to eight Drivers’ Championships (with Vettel and Verstappen) and six Constructors’ titles. The decision came following extensive consultations among Red Bull’s majority shareholders, despite Horner having a contract in place until 2030. Laurent Mekies, formerly of Ferrari and most recently team principal of Red Bull’s sister outfit Racing Bulls, has been promoted to replace Horner, with Alan Permane taking over Mekies’ previous role.

Multiple factors reportedly contributed to Horner’s exit, from personal issues that came to light in 2024 (the well-publicised “sexgate” scandal) to the team’s declining on-track performance since mid-last year. The potential departure of Max Verstappen also played a role. The Dutch driver secured the 2024 Drivers’ Championship for Red Bull despite a car that fell behind McLaren’s pace, a trend that has continued this season. Red Bull currently sits fourth in the Constructors’ standings, even as Verstappen has managed two race wins.

Mekies, stepping in immediately, expressed gratitude for the opportunity: “Over the past year and a half, it has been an absolute privilege to lead the team at Racing Bulls,” he stated. “It’s been an extraordinary journey with all of our talented people. The team spirit is incredible, and I truly believe this is just the beginning.” Alan Permane, who now takes charge at Racing Bulls, added: “I am honoured to take on the role of Team Principal, and I want to thank Oliver and Helmut for the trust they have placed in me.”
