The 2025 Roland Garros is turning into a memorable edition for Italian tennis, with several Azzurri making deep runs on the Parisian clay. All eyes are now on Lorenzo Musetti and Flavio Cobolli, who both booked their places in the quarter-finals with impressive performances.
Musetti dispatched Argentina’s Mariano Navone in four sets in the third round, showcasing his maturity and tactical awareness. He followed that up with a superb win over Holger Rune (7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2), confirming his excellent form and reaching one of the biggest milestones of his career. “I handled the tough conditions well,” Musetti said. “I feel like I’ve grown a lot in the past few months.”
Flavio Cobolli continued his breakthrough season in style. After a four-set win over fellow Italian Matteo Arnaldi (6-3, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1), the Rome native cruised past seasoned campaigner Marin Cilic in straight sets. A recent finalist in Hamburg, Cobolli is now firmly establishing himself as a force on the main tour.
There was disappointment, however, for Jasmine Paolini. The No. 4 seed in the women’s draw saw her campaign come to an end in the round of 16 after a grueling battle against Elina Svitolina. Paolini won the opening set 6-4 and held three match points in the second, but couldn’t close it out. The Ukrainian turned the tide in a tiebreak and dominated the decider 6-1. Despite the loss, Paolini’s tournament was largely positive—she remains alive in the doubles draw alongside Sara Errani, with the pair now in the last 16.
Among the standout stories of the tournament is undoubtedly Matteo Gigante. The young Roman stunned former world No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets (6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4), establishing himself as one of the breakout stars of this year’s Slam. Gigante impressed with fearless shot-making and composure under pressure.
Jannik Sinner also did not disappoint. The world No. 1 breezed past French veteran Richard Gasquet with a dominant display. After sealing the first set with a signature backhand down the line, Sinner bageled his opponent in the second. The match ended with a standing ovation for Gasquet, who was playing the final match of his career.
Early exits included Francesco Passaro, who fell to Dutchman Jesper de Jong in a five-set thriller, and Mattia Bellucci, beaten in four sets by Jack Draper. In the women’s draw, Elisabetta Cocciaretto was knocked out in round two by Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova (6-1, 6-3).
Meanwhile, in mixed doubles, Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori continued their fine run, defeating Chan and Nys 6-4, 6-3 to reach the round of 16. With momentum building and several Italians still in the hunt, hopes remain high for a deep run at this year's French Open.
