Do you remember when Serie A had only 16 teams? Then it increased to 18, and today we have 20 teams. Along with the Coppa Italia and European competitions, the upcoming season is set to be the longest in history. For Inter and Juventus, who will participate in five different competitions, the season will last a full 11 months.
In addition to the standard national competitions, such as the league and the Coppa Italia, the rankings of both teams in the last season have made their calendar extremely intense. To start with, they will enter the Coppa Italia directly in the quarterfinals. But the real novelty is the new format of the Champions League. The number of participating teams has increased from 32 to 36, and all will be placed in a single group. This new structure guarantees two additional matches: not just six, with home and away legs, but eight, with four matches at home and four away.
Moreover, Inter, the league champions, and Juventus, the Coppa Italia winners, will also participate in the Italian Supercup, which has been revamped with a basketball-style playoff format. As happened last year, the competition will be held in Saudi Arabia and will feature, in addition to Inter and Juventus, Milan and Atalanta, who finished second in the league and were Coppa Italia finalists, respectively. The format includes a semifinal and a final, both for the winners and the losers. The defending champions are Inter, who defeated Napoli in January 2024.
If Inter and Juventus manage to reach the finals in both national cups and in the revamped Champions League, it will be a record-breaking season. Let's just hope that no one catches a cold along the way…
