Jannik Sinner had a winning debut at the Cincinnati Masters 1000. The South Tyrolean, world number one, defeated American Alex Michelsen, 19 years old and ranked 57th in the ATP rankings, with a score of 6-4 7-5 in just under two hours of play. Despite not facing significant risks, Sinner managed the critical moments of the match confidently, saving all eight break points he faced. With this victory, the Italian secured a place in the round of 16, where he will face Australian Jordan Thompson, who defeated Argentine Sebastian Baez.
Unfortunately, the Cincinnati tournament proved to be bitter for three other Italians. Matteo Berrettini, who entered the draw with a wild card, was eliminated in the first round by Holger Rune. The Roman, after dominating the first set 6-2, was clearly outplayed in the following two sets, with the Dane winning 6-1 6-4, closing the match in just under two hours.
Lorenzo Musetti and Matteo Arnaldi also had to bid farewell to the tournament prematurely. Musetti, the 14th seed, was defeated by Frances Tiafoe in two sets with a swift 6-3 6-2, while Arnaldi lost in three sets to Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry after a battle lasting over two hours.
With Sinner still in the competition and expected to face Thompson today, Italian tennis is counting on the South Tyrolean to continue shining on the American hard courts.
