Jannik Sinner's 2024 has already been memorable. The Italian tennis player has exceeded expectations, winning his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open and reaching the top of the ATP rankings. Up until the French Open, the South Tyrolean dominated the circuit, adding another Masters 1000 title (Miami), the ATP 500 in Rotterdam, and before Wimbledon, his first grass-court tournament win in Halle.
However, injuries have once again been a blemish. First, a hip issue caused him to miss the Rome tournament, then a virus at Wimbledon heavily affected his quarter-final match against Medvedev. The Championships started brilliantly for the world number one. In the first round, despite dropping a set, he easily overcame German player Yannick Hanfmann.
Then, the challenge against Matteo Berrettini: the two Italians put on a spectacular second-round match, one of the best of the entire tournament, showcasing Sinner in excellent form. These performances continued against Kecmanovic in the third round and Shelton in the fourth round, where Sinner won both matches in straight sets, setting up a promising quarter-final against Russian Daniil Medvedev.
Everything seemed to be going smoothly until Sinner felt unwell before the match and subsequently on the court. Despite not giving up, he lost in the fifth set and was eliminated in the quarter-finals. Carlos Alcaraz triumphed at Wimbledon again, while Sinner will have to reflect once more on his physical fitness, especially in Grand Slam tournaments.
