World No. 1 Sinner won with a score of 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in 1 hour and 37 minutes, securing his seventh title of the season and 17th overall in his career. The 23-year-old from San Candido celebrated his maiden triumph in Shanghai, marking his fourth win in eight encounters against the 37-year-old Serbian Novak Djokovic. Djokovic missed the opportunity to reach the landmark of his 100th career title.
Sinner continues to rewrite his resume: this is his third Masters 1000 title of 2024 and his second consecutive one, following his victory in Cincinnati in August. It’s an achievement that no player this young has ever accomplished before.
The first set was tightly contested, with both players holding serve impeccably. Neither allowed more than two points on their serve, and there were no break points or critical moments. Sinner’s only challenge came in the tenth game, where he found himself down 0-30 but managed to recover. The set inevitably went to a tie-break, where Sinner shifted gears, racing to a 4-0 lead. Djokovic attempted a comeback (5-3, 6-4), but Sinner closed it out 7-4, aided by six aces, taking the first set in 56 minutes.
The momentum shifted further in Sinner’s favor in the second set. Djokovic struggled in his first service game, and down 1-2, he faced the first two break points of the match. The Serbian saved the first with an ace, but surrendered the second, allowing Sinner to extend his lead to 3-1. Despite Djokovic’s efforts to stay in the match, Sinner remained untouchable on serve, eventually serving for the match at 5-2. He closed out the set 6-3, sealing the victory in Shanghai and reaffirming his dominance this season.
