The summer transfer window has closed, and it was full of twists and turns, with sudden U-turns, missed deals, and big international transfers. Italian clubs also played a major role, led by Juventus under Cristiano Giuntoli.
According to Transfermarkt data, the biggest spender was Chelsea: the Blues' management invested €238.5 million, with the most expensive signing being Pedro Neto from Wolverhampton for €60 million.
Surprisingly, Brighton follows with €231.2 million spent and a net balance of -€182.91 million. The top 5 is rounded out by Manchester United, Atletico Madrid, and Aston Villa, with €214.5, €185, and €176.2 million spent, respectively.
The first Italian club on this list is Juventus: the bianconeri spent €162.8 million on new signings, with a net balance of -€59.3 million, including all summer sales. Juventus ranks seventh in Europe, ahead of Napoli under Antonio Conte. The azzurri management invested €149.5 million in signings, with a negative balance of €138 million (Buongiorno was the most expensive purchase at €35 million).
Atalanta also makes the top 20 in Europe, spending a total of €96.9 million on incoming transfers. Finally, Inter spent €70 million, including buybacks (Frattesi was the most expensive at €29 million), with a negative net balance of €56.7 million. Roma's balance is -€73.1 million, with €91.1 million spent on all signings. Milan under Fonseca, however, does not appear on the list.
