Andy Diaz made a powerful statement on the world stage, securing gold in the triple jump at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing with a sensational leap of 17.80 meters. It was not only a new Italian indoor record, but also the best mark worldwide so far in 2024.
It took just one attempt for the 28-year-old to seal the title. His opening jump left the rest of the field trailing: Zhu Yaming of China claimed silver with 17.33m, and Brazil’s Almir Dos Santos took bronze at 17.22m.
The previous Italian indoor record of 17.73m was held by Diaz’s coach, Fabrizio Donato, since 2011. Diaz already owns the national outdoor record (17.75m).
It was a tough day for fellow Italian Simone Biasutti, who finished tenth after failing to register a competitive mark beyond the fourth round.
