Serie A teams strengthen their position, while Portugal collapses and La Liga gains ground

The race for an extra Champions League berth is heating up, with Italy still holding second place in the UEFA rankings. Serie A clubs delivered a strong performance in the latest European fixtures, but Spain is making a push, while Portugal’s hopes are fading fast.

Italy secured five wins in the latest round—courtesy of Milan, Inter, Atalanta, Bologna, and Lazio—along with a draw for Juventus and a single loss for Roma. This helped Serie A climb to 15.31 points in the rankings, maintaining a solid lead over Spain, which now sits in third with 13.93. The Spanish league saw wins from Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid, but those gains were offset by losses from Real Sociedad, Athletic Bilbao, and Girona.

The Premier League remains firmly on top with 17.10 points, powered by victories from Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Manchester United. Belgium holds fourth place with 12.75 points, while Portugal drops to fifth with 12.45 after a disastrous week, with all four of its clubs—Benfica, Sporting Lisbon, Porto, and Braga—suffering defeats, severely hindering their coefficient growth.

Trailing behind are Germany (11.98) and France (11.21), with Sweden, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic rounding out the top 10. The battle for second place is far from over, as Italy faces increasing pressure from Spain and potential competition from the Bundesliga. Lazio and Fiorentina, both already through to the knockout rounds, and Roma, on the verge of securing a playoff spot, will play a crucial role in keeping Serie A’s ranking high.

With seven out of nine Italian teams still in contention, Serie A remains in a strong position to secure a top-two finish, which would ensure five Champions League spots again next season. However, every point will be crucial in the final stretch of the European campaign.
