Another day at the US Open ends with an Italian touch, as the Azzurri continue to shine in New York during the season’s final Grand Slam. In the second round, Jannik Sinner breezed past American Alex Michelsen, winning in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-0, 6-2, conceding just six games to his opponent. Sinner, currently the world's number one, will face Australia’s O’Connell in the third round, who defeated Italy’s Mattia Bellucci 3-1.
Matteo Arnaldi and Flavio Cobolli also advanced to the third round. Arnaldi defeated Russian Safiullin in straight sets (6-2, 6-4, 6-4), while Cobolli needed four sets to overcome Belgium’s Bergs with a final score of 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3.
Matteo Berrettini, however, was knocked out in the second round by American Taylor Fritz. Ranked 44th in the ATP, Berrettini lost 6-3, 7-6, 6-1 to the world number 12. The match lasted just over two hours, with Berrettini fighting hard in the second set but unable to alter the outcome.
In the women's tournament, Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini advanced both in singles and as a doubles pair. The Olympic champions from Paris defeated the duo of Kato and Wang 6-3, 6-2.
The big news of the day, however, is the shocking exit of Carlos Alcaraz at the hands of Botic van de Zandschulp. The Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion was eliminated in the second round, something that hasn’t happened since Wimbledon 2021. The match was expected to be one-sided, but it went in favor of the Dutch player as Alcaraz, ranked third in the world, was undone by numerous unforced errors.
Today, Lorenzo Musetti will take to the court in the third round against American Brandon Nakashima, with the match scheduled after 10:00 PM.
