The Dutchman wins his first race of 2025 with a dominant display in Suzuka. McLaren duo on the podium, Leclerc solid in fourth

Max Verstappen returned to winning ways in emphatic style at Suzuka, claiming his first victory of the 2025 season and fourth straight Japanese Grand Prix win — a new record at the historic circuit. Despite a Red Bull not at its best, the Dutchman showcased his class, grabbing pole by 0.012 seconds and controlling the race from start to finish.

It was Verstappen’s 64th career victory, and one that brings him within a single point of championship leader Lando Norris (61 to 62), who finished second ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri. The McLaren pair pushed hard, especially in the closing laps, but never found a way past.

Charles Leclerc led the Ferrari charge in fourth, consistent but distant, crossing the line 16 seconds behind the winner. The Maranello squad showed signs of progress but still lacked the pace to contend for the podium. Last year’s third-place finisher Carlos Sainz couldn’t replicate that success this time.

Lewis Hamilton, starting on hard tyres, managed to climb to seventh, while George Russell and Kimi Antonelli followed. The Italian rookie etched his name into the record books by becoming the youngest driver ever to lead a Grand Prix and set the fastest lap, a feat that no longer earns points but remains a notable accolade.

Elsewhere, Isack Hadjar delivered an impressive performance for Racing Bulls, finishing eighth, while home hero Yuki Tsunoda struggled to make an impact and ended up twelfth. All eyes now turn to the next round, with the title fight heating up.
