The Vuelta 2024 concluded yesterday with another victory for Primoz Roglic, who claimed the grand Spanish tour for the fourth time in his career. The Slovenian finished with a 2'36" lead over Australian Ben O'Connor and 3'13" over Spain's Enric Mas. Richard Carapaz and Mattias Skjelmose completed the top five, finishing 4'02" and 5'49" behind, respectively.
Roglic dominated the Vuelta after a long comeback against O'Connor, which began in the first week of the race. O'Connor had initially gained a significant lead of nearly 5 minutes (4'51" at its peak) after a long breakaway. However, stage by stage, climb by climb, Roglic gradually chipped away at the gap, taking the red jersey in the final weekend. Yesterday's time trial sealed his triumph, marking his fourth Vuelta win following his 2023 Giro d'Italia victory.
Regarding the other classifications in the Vuelta 2024, the green points jersey went to Kaden Groves, while Jay Vine claimed the climbers' jersey. Both took advantage of Wout van Aert's withdrawal after he had been a dominant force with three stage wins before his crash in the final week.
Skjelmose won the white jersey for the best young rider, while the combativity award went to Marc Soler of UAE Team Emirates, who also took home the title of the best team in the Vuelta.
Thus, the third grand tour of the season concludes, which, after the Giro and the Tour victories by the great Tadej Pogacar, sees another Slovenian triumph. Now, all eyes turn to the year's main event, the World Championships in Zurich, scheduled for September 29.
