Soncin’s Azzurre face a monumental test in Geneva, where they’ll take on title-holders England for a place in the final

The first semi-final of UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 will see Italy take on England on Tuesday, 22 July in Geneva. It will mark the 27th meeting between the two national teams, with Italy currently ahead in the head-to-head record: 11 wins to England’s 9, and 6 draws. The Azzurre also lead both in home (5–3–2) and away (3–3–2) encounters, with an overall goal tally of 44–42 in their favour.

Despite the history, it will be a first-ever semi-final showdown at the Euros between the two sides. Italy have reached the semi-finals six times, most recently in 1997, when they defeated Spain before falling to Germany in the final. Their earlier semi-final appearances came consecutively between 1984 and 1993. In total, they boast two semi-final wins and four losses.

For England, this marks their third consecutive Euro semi-final, after 2017 and their title-winning run in 2022. Coached by Sarina Wiegman since 2021, the Lionesses have established themselves as one of the most powerful forces in women’s football, reaching the World Cup final just a year after their European triumph.

Italy, meanwhile, haven’t contested a final since 1997. Now under the guidance of Andrea Soncin, they face the daunting task of stopping the defending champions. But with belief, experience, and a balanced squad, the Azzurre are determined to pull off the upset and book a ticket to the final.
